Adele Pennington
Adele Pennington is one of the UK’s leading mountaineers and has a number of notable achievements to her name, including being the first British woman to have climbed Mount Everest twice and the first British woman to summit Ama Dablam in winter, and has so far ticked off six of the 14 8000m peaks.
It is safe to say that Adele was born with a ‘Spirit of Adventure’ and that by the age of two she had climbed over a six foot gate to join the prize fish in a neighbour’s pond. By the time she was eight years old she had climbed Mt Snowdon with her step-dad; this lit the candle for greater adventure and the beginning of a dream to reach the world’s highest mountain. This was a dream that was not easy to achieve whilst growing up in a county like Northamptonshire, but school trips to the Lake District and holidays in Scotland kept the flame alight.
It was not until she was studying for a PhD in Biochemistry at York University that she became much more involved in her love for the great outdoors and became a member of the Scarborough and District Mountain Rescue Team. She spent all her free time in the hills learning the hard way and serving what was to be the start of a long apprenticeship in mountaineering. Adele was not satisfied with the amount of time she could spend in the mountains so she took a sabbatical year from her post in medical research to explore and climb some of the mountains of New Zealand and the European Alps. By this time she had also notched up 250 Munros.
It was time to return to reality and think about a career that would enable her to follow her love of the great outdoors. She achieved a PGCE and began a career as a Teacher of Chemistry & Outdoor Education. During her years as a teacher in the North East of England and through her involvement in the D of E Awards and her Rock Climbing Club she inspired many youngsters from all walks of life. She took every opportunity she had to climb higher and higher.
In 1998 Adele made the first British female winter ascent of Ama Dablam (6386m) in the Himalaya. Her climbing career took a step backward when she was involved in a serious accident in the Alps; she spent five months in a wheelchair and a full year getting her body back on track for she was determined that her outdoor career was not over but only just beginning. She gave up her very secure and successful career as a teacher to become a freelance Outdoor Instructor. It was not long before she joined the ‘Jagged Globe’ team to become an expedition leader. This was an opening that enabled Adele to chase her dream.
She was the first British woman to have climbed Mount Everest twice; as well as this she holds the British female record for climbing six of the fourteen 8000m peaks. Currently, she has settled in the North West of Scotland to run her own company, ‘Adele Pennington Mountaineering’. She is also enjoying her latest pursuits in ski -mountaineering and sea-kayaking. In 2021 she completed her ‘Operation Scottish Classic Rock by Bicycle’ challenge, in which she linked 26 classic routes (including the Cuillin Ridge) in one 45-day push, cycling between the routes.

The Longest Line
They did it! They have crossed the longest straight line through Great Britain! Calum Maclean (32) and Jenny Graham (42) hiked, climbed, scrambled and wades 78.55 km from the A9 to the A939 through the Cairngorms National Park with a total ascent of 5706 metres. The two Scottish adventurers are thought to be the first to complete an end-to-end journey of Britain's longest linear walk without encountering a road. They set out on Friday August 27 at 9:16am and finished Monday August 30 at 9:12pm. The longest linear walk in Britain was first created in 2018 by map makers Ordnance Survey. At the time of plotting the line, an OS expert commented: “I wouldn’t recommend anyone do it unless they are very conversant with a map and compass. It is not following known tracks or paths and it looks like there may well be several scrambles along the way, too.” The highlands terrain included steep hills, mountain summits, forests, crags, river crossings, countless streams, a waterfall, bogs, peat hags and many miles of thick heather. But Calum and Jenny did it! You are now able to enjoy this amazing film of this adventure!

Social Sessions

Meet and Greet
On Friday evening, the Base Camp Festival team will welcome all festival goers to the main Base Camp tent for our ‘meet and greet’ session, the perfect way to kick off the festival! During the session you’ll get the opportunity to talk to some of the key people involved with planning and running the festival, who will also give some vital info and tips about getting the most out of your weekend. It’s also a great chance to get to know other Base Campers and we’ll even treat you to a complimentary pint of our special festival IPA, courtesy of the Fell Brewery. The evening will continue with music from the fantastic McKenna brothers – who’ve travelled all the way from Hamilton, Ontario to be with us – and they will entertain us with their uptempo repertoire of Irish-influenced folk and pub songs.

Coffee Convos
If you haven’t signed up for a morning technical session or just prefer a slower start to the day, then why not grab a coffee (or whatever your hot beverage of choice is!) and head to the main stage in the Base Camp tent for a mid-morning chat with special guests from the outdoors world. Each morning we’ll have a panel of guests on stage to chat about a selection of current topics that are pertinent to the outdoor community, which may include some of the following issues: access rights in the countryside, the influence of social media on our outdoor activities, mental health and the outdoors, diversity in the outdoors, women in mountaineering and more. This is an interactive session, so audience members will be encouraged to engage in the conversation, whether asking panel members questions or air their opinions on the topics being discussed.

The Big Raffle
This is one session that none of you will want to miss! Every Base Camp Festival attendee will be automatically entered into our big festival raffle, and on Sunday evening we’ll be announcing all the winning numbers in the Base Camp tent. The draw will be made by the McKenna brothers, and up for grabs will be numerous great prizes from our festival partners, from beanie hats to backpacks and everything in between! If you’ve ever been to one of (presenting partner) Trek & Mountain’s pub quiz and raffles at Fort William Mountain Festival, you’ll know what to expect – i.e. a lot of fun, and a lot of great prizes! After all the prizes have been given away, the night will continue with more music and frivolities, the ideal way to round off a great weekend at Buttermere!
