Get out on rock at Base Camp Festival

Rock climbing, scrambling, bouldering, via ferrata… whatever your preferred rock activity we have you covered at Base Camp Festival.

With famous Lakeland crags to be found in the fells surrounding the festival site, plus bouldering and via ferrata close by in the Honister pass, we have instructor-led rock sessions going on all weekend that are suited to beginners and experts alike.

Our team of experienced instructors, led by British Mountain Guide Robin Beadle, will be

taking festival-goers to some of the best rock venues in the area, during half-day and full-day sessions that cost from as little as £40. Continue reading for the full list of sessions available during the festival weekend:

Introduction to scrambling - £45

Take the first step from hillwalking to mountaineering with our beginner’s scrambling session, which will enable you to leave the footpath and start exploring the wilder side of the mountains. You will learn how scrambling routes are graded, how to plan your day out, and an array of techniques for moving safely on rock. By the end of this session you will be equipped to take on grade 1 scrambles yourself.

Intermediate (roped) scrambling - £45

You’re confident on grade 1 scrambles and now want to take it further? This session is for

you! During the day you will learn about the simple rope techniques that can be used to keep you and your climbing partner safe on harder scrambling routes. You’ll learn about short roping and moving together, how to take coils and the importance of communication and decision-making while on the crag.

Via ferrata at Honister Pass - £45

For a quick adrenaline fix it is difficult to beat a trip across the UK's original Via Ferrata! Set in the Lake District, high on the side of Honister Pass and above the beautiful valley of Buttermere, this is a truly unique mountain climbing experience. We highly recommend this activity for people seeking excitement and something a little out of the ordinary.

Bouldering - £40

Bouldering is a great way to learn, or improve, your movement on rock, and all you need is a pair of climbing shoes, a bouldering mat and a chalk bag. Without the need for a rope, you can focus on perfecting your climbing technique and just experience the sheer joy of moving on rock . During this session you will learn about the ethics of bouldering, how to read a guidebook and how to use a variety of foot and hand holds to get to the top of a problem.

Introduction to rock climbing (single pitch) - £45

Always wanted to climb on the crags you’ve seen while out hillwalking? Then this your chance to take the plunge into the wonderful world of rock climbing. Whether you are a complete beginner or have climbed indoors and want to get your first taste of real rock, this session will allow you to start learning the basics of rock climbing in a completely safe environment and with close supervision from an instructor.

Introduction to multi-pitch rock climbing - £75

For those with some climbing experience who’d like to take things further, this session is a taster of what’s involved in multi-pitch climbing. During the day you will recap on basic skills and choosing/planning a route; your instructor will also discuss carrying equipment on your harness, the use of protection, building anchors, stance management, and retreating from a route. Instructor/client ratio is 1:3.

Climbing wall on-site

Don’t forget that we have our 6m climbing wall on the festival site itself, so if you’ve never climbed before and want to give it a go, just go along to the wall and talk to our expert instructors who will get you kitted up and help you take your first steps on your climbing journey!
